Domestic violence kills over 2.500 women in Russia from 2020 to 2021

Some 2,680 women were killed as a result of domestic violence in Russia between 2020 and 2021.

The human rights consortium of women's NGOs made the statement in its analysis, Kommersant reports. 

The consortium's experts analysed 11,175 sentences during the specified period and found that 3,759 of these sentences described the murders of women. It is possible that the real death toll from domestic violence is even higher.

In the documents, the men who committed these crimes are cited as reasons for "loss of work" as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, "emotional unrest", "lack of patience", "inability to leave", etc.

The highest level of domestic violence in the period from 2020 to 2021 was recorded in St Petersburg, Perm Territory, Omsk, Kurgan and Moscow regions.

"We sent requests to all regions in the pandemic with a request to take additional measures to help victims of domestic violence. Some regions, for example, Bashkiria, have strengthened the work of hotlines, but these are minimal measures in the context of the whole country," Sofia Rusova, co-author of the report, an employee of the consortium said.
