How "good warrior" Mkrtchyan raped women and kidnapped people in Ukraine
Eyewitness accounts
WORLD 12 September 2022 - 13:59
The residents of Milovsky and Novoalexandrivsky territorial communities of Beryslavsky district, Kherson region of Ukraine have accused the military commandant appointed by the Russian occupation authorities, Suren Mkrtchyan of terrorising and kidnapping people, selling drugs and humanitarian aid, and of being involved in the rape of local girls and women.
According to Caliber.Az, this was stated in the article published by the Ukrainian Centre for Investigative Journalism.
According to a resident of the village of Milovo, who asked not to be named, their village was seized by Russian troops on March 9. Suren Mkrtchyan was introduced to the local residents as the military commandant of two settlements - Milovo and the neighbouring Novoalexandrivka. He immediately began forcing local officials and the population to cooperate with the occupation troops.
The Centre for Investigative Journalism found out that Suren Seyranovich Mkrtchyan (09/09/1978) lived in the resort village of Inozemtsevo in the Stavropol region of the Russian Federation before coming to the occupied Donetsk region. According to the Centre, Suren Mkrtchyan, with his Ukrainian wife and two children, had been living in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk Region in recent years and served as deputy chief of staff in the so-called 11th separate "Vostok" motorized rifle regiment of the 1st Army Corps of the "DPR", which is under the command of the Russian army.
The investigators' article states that on his Facebook page Suren Mkrtchyan confesses his love for Russia, congratulates its President Vladimir Putin "on the return of our city of glory - Sevastopol, Crimea, and Stepanakert (Khankendi - Ed.)" and quotes Chechen head Ramzan Kadyrov: "A warrior man is a good man in the first place".
Those who have encountered the "good man-warrior" recount the crimes committed by Mkrtchyan.
"Suren Mkrtchyan was involved in the abduction and torture of many people in our community. Personally, he put so much pressure on me that after leaving for Ukrainian-controlled territory, I was afraid of ethnic Armenians for a very long time. Because Suren said that his compatriots would get me wherever I was if I escaped from the village," the Milovka resident told journalists.
Local residents claim that it was Suren Mkrtchyan who "removed" Oleg Yakhnienko, the head of Milovo village, who had been kidnapped twice, from his post and "appointed" his protégés to replace him. For the first time, the occupants abducted Yakhnienko on March 28 and drove him, according to local residents, towards Berislav, where they kept him in an unknown location until April 13. The second time, the legitimate head of the Milovo community was abducted by the Russian military in July.
After Yakhnienko's first abduction, according to eyewitnesses, Mkrtchyan gathered village council workers and 'appointed' the head of the community, pointing the finger at the youngest of them, a 21-year-old director of the local service centre, Viktoriya Dmitrieva. After this, the "commandant" taunted her and many other locals. Viktoriya soon managed to flee the village and go to Ukrainian-controlled territory.
According to the Centre's interlocutors, Suren Mkrtchyan was also directly involved in numerous cases of sexual abuse.
"Suren took girls he liked to Russian checkpoints to "spend the night" there and "entertain" the Russian military. He raped some of them himself. Such cases have occurred both in our village and in a neighbouring village, Novoalexandrivka," said residents of Milovo.
Those who had to deal with Mkrtchyan say that he often behaved inappropriately, endlessly abusing drugs and even selling them. He also used to sell humanitarian aid.
Locals say that Suren Mkrtchyan has not been seen in the Beryslav region lately. They say Russian authorities may have arrested Mkrtchyan themselves or even killed him and burnt them in a mobile crematorium to cover up traces of grave war crimes against civilians in the occupied Kherson region. However, it is possible that such a ruthless man was moved elsewhere to terrorise the locals.
