Vital battles in mountains
Details of September confrontation

The international community, which had not yet recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, was stirred up by the news of large-scale military operations in the Karabakh region in autumn 2020.
During that period, not all military analysts predicted Azerbaijan’s brilliant victory.
Moreover, some experts even predicted defeat for Azerbaijan, assessing its military capabilities as those in the distant 1990s.
The world has witnessed the Azerbaijani army’s ability. Our troops equipped with modern weapons smashed the enemy’s forces within 44 days. The military experts of many countries constantly and scrupulously tracked the movements of our troops, the use of high-precision weapons, the accurate flights of UAVs, and then prepared analytical articles about Baku’s military success. Even today, after two years, foreign media often publishes articles about the strategy and tactics of the 44-day second Karabakh war, or rather, about the combat power and victory of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.
It seems that after the September clashes on the conditional Armenian-Azerbaijani border, military experts will have something to analyse. Caliber.Az was informed that despite the sudden large-scale armed provocation of the Armenian side on September 13 night, the Azerbaijani army again demonstrated high professionalism by conducting a brilliant military operation in the mountainous area at night.
Moreover, according to our sources, many combat positions of the Armenian armed forces were taken under control by Azerbaijani special forces in hand-to-hand combat. The fact that martyrs and wounded servicemen of the Azerbaijani army were mainly wounded as a result of close-range shooting testifies to this.
The mountainous terrain in most cases limits the ability of troops to use military equipment. War in the highlands is regarded in the charters and field manuals as combat activity under special conditions. Taking into account many specific features, such actions is the prerogative of specially equipped and trained mountain troops.
The special forces and commando units were involved to kill the Armenian saboteurs. The high level of combat training of Azerbaijani military personnel, the knowledge and skills they acquired during the exercises, their fighting spirit and, of course, their responsibility to the country, to the Motherland, allowed them to quickly seize combat positions of the Armenian Armed Forces and kill the enemy’s soldiers.
However, the losses of the enemy testify to the high level of training of our fighters. The Armenian side recognises the loss of more than 200 soldiers. Of course, the Armenian leadership deliberately understates its losses to avoid panic in the ranks of its troops and public attacks. The result of the clashes, the positions seized by the Azerbaijani troops, video footages and photos show that the losses of the Armenian troops are much bigger.
The professional troops that can perform any task in mountainous areas for Azerbaijan is a very important factor as there are many mountainous and high-mountainous areas with difficult terrain on the border with Armenia. Today, not every NATO member state has the forces that professionally and quickly fight in mountainous areas. Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani special forces and commando units carried out a combat operation at an altitude of 3,000 metres without using aircraft, and even at night.
A high level of physical and psychological training, mountaineering skills create a new image of the Azerbaijani special troops and predetermine the defeat of the enemy’s forces. Unfortunately, Azerbaijan got an enemy with a bad memory, and it has to constantly remind of these skills.
