FM slams countries failing to ensure security of Azerbaijani embassies abroad

Azerbaijani Foreign MinisterJeyhun Bayramov has criticised the countries not ensuring the security of Azerbaijani embassies coming under attacks of radical foreign-based Armenians after the Azerbaijani-Armenian border escalation on September 12-14.

He made the remarks in an interview with the local REAL TV on September 22, Report informs.

"Commenting on such provocative steps, attacks on our diplomats, diplomatic missions, first of all, I would like to note that the duty of each receiving party is to ensure security. Situations are different. We see such provocations in many countries. There are countries that take preventive measures themselves. In some cases, we warn them ourselves, and they take quick, prompt measures to prevent provocation. However, unfortunately, in some cases, the reactions and steps of the receiving party are, to put it mildly, inadequate. In this case, of course, we put forward serious demands, ambassadors are invited, protest notes are presented to them," Bayramov said.

He recalled that all UN member states are members of the Vienna Convention. According to the convention, one of the fundamental principles of international relations is that any host State must ensure the security of diplomatic missions and diplomats at all times.

"The organisation of the protection of embassies in Azerbaijan at a high level is a clear indicator of the responsibility with which the Azerbaijani state treats international obligations."

Bayramov said that if there were cases of vandalism, they must be investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice.

"This must be done by all means. We, the Azerbaijani state, are adamant about this. We believe that such a mechanism of impunity gives the green light to future provocations. Therefore, we will keep this under control," he said.

It should be recalled that in recent days groups of Armenian radicals have attacked Azerbaijani embassies in France, Lebanon and Georgia.
