European Commission: Azerbaijan - reliable partner of Europe

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has said that Azerbaijan is a reliable partner of Europe.

The president of the European Commission made these remarks at the IGB commissioning ceremony in Sofia on October 1, APA reports.

Ursula von der Leyen said that the interconnector project between Bulgaria and Greece has been available for more than 10 years. Discussions related to this project started in 2009.

“At that period, Bulgaria was greatly affected by Gazprom company’s decision because Gazprom refused to export gas through Ukrainian territory. The implementation of this project took time, but we were determined. This project required patience. Today I congratulate the Bulgarian and Greek governments on the launch of this project,” she said.

Von der Leyen noted that this interconnector has the potential to supply gas to entire Bulgaria.

“This is great news in a very difficult period. People feel the consequences of the Russian war both in Bulgaria and in other regions of Europe, but Europe will be provided with gas for the winter thanks to such projects. Europe has worked very hard in this sphere and has taken important steps, especially in recent months, by replacing Russian gas with alternative gas sources, that is, more reliable sources, and partners. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is here, I visited your country for this purpose in July 2022,” von der Leyen said.

She noted that Europe will have enough gas for the winter.

“We have reliable suppliers and friends such as Azerbaijan, Norway, the US, and Algeria. They assist us at this critical period,” the president of the European Commission said.
