President: About 250 Azerbaijanis killed, injured by Armenia-laid mines

President Ilham Aliyev has said that about 250 Azerbaijanis have been killed or wounded in explosions of land mines planted on Azerbaijan's liberated territories after the ceasefire deal signed with Armenia to end the 44-day war in 2020.

He made the remarks at the first-ever National Urban Forum, which was held in the liberated city of Aghdam on October 5.

"One of the biggest complications, apart from large-scale reconstruction, are landmines. Since, the war ended... almost two years ago, we have almost 250 Azerbaijanis, who have been killed or seriously injured as a result of land mine explosions. Unfortunately, the figure is growing every week. Just last week, we had two killed and three seriously injured," he said in an address to the forum.

He accused Armenia of brutally violating international law during its nearly 30-year occupation of Azerbaijani territories.

"The Armenian state was conducting the policy of illegal settlement of Armenians from different countries to settle on the occupied territories. And this is considered to be a brutal violation of international law and Geneva conventions," he added.

The two-day forum on October 5-6 presents Azerbaijan's achievements in sustainable urban development, including in the territories liberated from the long-term Armenian occupation in autumn 2020, calls for expanding international cooperation in this area, exchanging experience in the smart and inclusive development of urbanization, discussing issues of restoring the settlements destroyed during, etc.
