Armenia to retain parliamentary form of government

The Constitutional Reforms Council spoke in favor of preserving the parliamentary form of government in Armenia.

At the joint session of the Council and the Commission on Constitutional Reforms the advantages of presidential and parliamentary models of management were discussed. The necessity of switching to a presidential form of government as well as advantages of a parliamentary model were substantiated during the session, Caliber.Az reports, quoting the Armenian media.

By a majority of votes - eight in favor and one against - the sitting participants spoke in favor of the parliamentary form of government.

To recap, during the March 1, 2021 rally Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated a number of shortcomings in the current Constitution, which manifested themselves especially in the crisis management. He also said that amendments to the Constitution should be discussed, including the possibility of switching to semi-presidential system. These discussions should be held with the parliament, government, president, political forces and civil society, he added.
