UN: Promoting gender inequality to boost economy by $12 trillion

UN Women Executive Director Seema Sami Bacchus has said advancing gender equality in the workplace could boost the global economy by $12 trillion by 2025.

She noted that gender inequality could become a major economic problem if women, who make up half of the world’s working-age population, fail to fulfill their potential, according to Early Bulletins.

“Advancing women’s equality could add $12 trillion to global growth by 2025,” she said.

Bacchus said that in recent years the world has seen a trend toward improving the situation of women, but the pandemic has had a negative impact on this process, in particular, because they were forced to sit with their children due to the closure of kindergartens.

According to the head of the organisation, it will take modern society 300 years to achieve gender equality and repeal discriminatory laws.

Previously, researchers from the University of Melbourne found that unpaid domestic work is associated with poorer mental health in working women.
