REGION 07 December 2022 - 11:55
The "PIRI REIS " submarine, the first of the Turkish "New Type Submarine Project" (YTDP) has started its trials on sea with photos emerging in the Turkish media, showing the submarine on the water surface in the Gulf of Izmir.
As Defenceturk reported, the assembly of the TCG PIRI REIS (S-330), the first submarine built at Gölcük Shipyard had been initiated by the Presidency of Defense Industries in order to meet the needs of the Naval Forces Command.
The submarines of this category, referred to as Type-214TN (Turkish Navy) in the international military literature, were first called Djerba Class. After a revision process, they started to be called the Reis Class.
According to Ekotrent, the YTDP is the largest submarine construction project realized jointly to date. The submarines, which the Turkish Naval Forces Command calls the "Reis Class Submarine", are produced with 80% domestic contribution.
Within the scope of the $2.7 billion project, 214-class 6 modern submarines with air-independent propulsion system (AIP) will join the inventory of the Turkish navy until 2027.
Submarines with AIP are known as the most strategic submarine ships after nuclear-propelled submarines worldwide.
The Turkish Submarine Fleet has a long history spanning 134 years, Defence Turkey notes, and has an indispensable place among world navies with its respectable traits and capabilities. With its modern vessels, the submarine fleet is one of the most vital combat elements that forges the striking force of the Turkish Navy. The fleet currently operates a total of 12 submarines
The launch of the TCG PIRI REIS (S-330) submarine was held on 22 December 2019 at a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The assembly of each submarine takes 62 months, out of which 42 are for construction and equipment, 9 months of Port Acceptance Test (HAT) and 11 months of Maritime Acceptance Test (SAT). The first submarine will be completed in 2022 and the other 5 will be completed in 2027, each within a 12-month phase.
