Azerbaijani Press Council urges embassy to comment on 14 Iranians’ illegal entry to Karabakh
SOCIETY 08 December 2022 - 15:54
The Azerbaijani Press Council's Board members have urged the Iranian embassy to react to media reports on the illegal entry of 14 Iranians into Karabakh and Iran's sale of weapons to Armenia and their further transportation through the Lachin corridor into Azerbaijani territory.
"A few days ago, Azerbaijani media spread information that on November 24, 14 Iranian citizens illegally entered the territory of Azerbaijan - a region populated by Armenians,” Report informs, quoting the appeal.
“There was speculation in the media that the individuals in question had come to train Armenians. There was a fair demand for the Iranian embassy in Azerbaijan to comment on the matter. Due to the embassy's persistent silence, factually confirmed information circulated in the media that another 13 Iranian citizens crossed into Armenian-populated Azerbaijani territory on November 30,” the appeal says.
The Press Council members wrote that the abovementioned issues remain a source of serious concern to Azerbaijani society.
“In these circumstances, one involuntarily gets the impression that Iran is trying to militarily strengthen invasive Armenia and aggravate the situation in the territories liberated from occupation. Despite numerous appeals by the Azerbaijani media, Iran's Embassy in Azerbaijan remains stubbornly silent, giving no comment. We hope that this appeal, addressed on behalf of the Azerbaijani media, will not go unanswered and you will express an appropriate official position on the aforementioned issues,” the appeal added.
