Elefsis, Timisoara and Veszprém - Europe's new cultural capitals

The European Commission (EC) has officially announced the selection of Elefsis (Greece), Timisoara (Romania) and Veszprém (Hungary) as European Capitals of Culture 2023.

"Holding the title of European Capital of Culture demonstrates the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe, stimulates sustainable tourism, and promotes urban development through culture. It also produces long-term positive social and economic effects both on the cities themselves and on the surrounding regions," the EC said in a communiqué published in Brussels on January 6, Interfax reports.

Johannes Barquet, the EC spokesman, said at a briefing in Brussels that "during 2023, the new European Capitals of Culture will offer numerous events, exhibitions, and spectacles that will open up the richness and diversity of their cultures to all."

To be selected for the title of European Capitals of Culture, the Commission said, cities must develop "cultural programmes with a strong European dimension, encouraging the active participation of their inhabitants and their communities".
