Türkiye's first parliamentary session kicks off

Türkiye's new 28th Parliament is sworn in on June 2.

The first session of the country's highest legislative body was opened by the oldest of the deputies, Nationalist Movement Party (MNP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, Anadolu news agency reports.

The MPs read from the rostrum the text of the oath enshrined in the constitution, in order of priority.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also attends the first session of parliament and observes the swearing-in process from the box of honored guests.

Afterwards, the process of electing a new speaker of parliament begins.

The elections to the Turkish Parliament were held on May 14.

According to the results, the Justice and Development Party won 268 out of 600 seats, New Welfare Party 5, HDP 50, Green Left Party 61, Labor Party 5, Republican People's Party 169 and IYI party 43.

The turnout in the elections was 87.05 per cent.

Note that President Erdoğan's swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, June 3 at the Parliament building.
