Armenia's withdrawal from CSTO sparks concerns over South Caucasus power dynamics
REGION 24 April 2024 - 09:31
In a recent statement, Imangali Tasmagambetov, the Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), addressed Armenia's decision to limit its participation in the organization's activities. Despite this move by Yerevan, Tasmagambetov reassured that the CSTO remains committed to upholding its obligations towards Armenia.
"Armenia has indeed limited its participation in the work of the CSTO, but the main mechanisms of interaction are functioning, the work on the organization's agenda continues," Tasmagambetov said, Izvestia reports.
He emphasized that the CSTO's commitments to Armenia align with the organization's fundamental goals and principles. However, Tasmagambetov also acknowledged that Armenia's decision to remain in or withdraw from the CSTO ultimately rests on the sovereign choice of the Armenian government.
Highlighting the potential repercussions of Armenia's withdrawal, Tasmagambetov noted that it could alter the balance of power in the South Caucasus region. He cautioned that such a shift could introduce unpredictable factors into regional security dynamics.
"In discussing the possibility of Armenia's departure from the CSTO, one must consider the resource base and real capabilities of the parties involved," Tasmagambetov added. "While this issue may not be deemed extremely urgent at present, it warrants careful analysis."
