Georgia casts doubt on EU membership, citing lack of readiness

In a statement from the ruling party in Georgia, doubts have been cast over the country's readiness and necessity to join the European Union.

Irakli Garibashvili, the chairman of the Georgian Dream party, recently conveyed these sentiments, suggesting that both the EU and Georgia may not be aligned in their aspirations for membership, Gazeta.ru reports.

Garibashvili's remarks underscored a lack of unanimity within Georgian leadership regarding EU accession. He highlighted the absence of a unified stance among Georgian authorities on the matter. Additionally, he indicated that Tbilisi would move swiftly to revoke the law concerning foreign agents once Georgia receives an invitation to join the EU.

"The parliament can engage in debates and discussions," Garibashvili asserted, "but ultimately, decisions regarding EU membership should be left to the electorate."
