Political analyst: Border demarcation - maximum benefit for Armenia

    REGION  29 April 2024 - 15:05

Armenian political analyst Vahram Atanesyan has said that border demarcation is the maximum benefit for Armenia.

“I would like to emphasise the internal situation and internal Armenian perception. Unfortunately, we see a very unprofessional approach from political analysts and some political circles. They say that during the period of the Soviet Union, there were no borders, so the Almaty Declaration is just a declaration,” Atanesyan told the journalists, commenting on the delimitation and demarcation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports.

“However, this is still the basis of the foundations, because the former Soviet states that are the UN member states took the Almaty Declaration as a basis. There is no other document according to which the Soviet Union ceases to exist. It was clearly written there that the states, gaining independence, respect each other’s sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity and inviolability of existing borders,” he said.

“According to Article 77 of the Constitution of the Soviet Union, it is clearly stated that the borders of the Soviet Union’s republic cannot be changed without its consent. The Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic rejected the request of the Regional Council of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region, that is, it did not agree that its borders should be changed. Moscow accepted this as a basis and also rejected it,” Atanesyan noted.

“The Armenian society says that the Almaty Declaration is not a basis for saying that there is a border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In this case, show me another document, on the basis of which Armenia should demarcate and delimitate the borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan. There is no such legal basis, except for the Almaty Declaration and the UN Charter, which Armenia and Azerbaijan signed as countries that gained independence in Almaty city according to this declaration. This is fundamentally in the interests of Armenia, and there should be no problem between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the opposition. This is the maximum benefit that Armenia can receive at the moment,” he added.
