The intensification of activity of the Armenian revanchists representing the Karabakh clan, Dashnaks and the church, who oppose the normalisation of the Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, in particular, against the delimitation and demarcation of the border, destabilised the internal political situation in Armenia.

Are Pashinyan’s opponents strong enough to bring people into the streets and disrupt the negotiation process?

Foreign experts expressed their opinions for Caliber.Az.

Ukrainian military and political analyst of the Information Resistance group Oleksandr Kovalenko said that in general, such provocations aimed at undermining the delimitation and demarcation processes between Baku and Yerevan are quite an expected phenomenon.

He reminded that he had repeatedly said that revanchists in Armenia would do harm, parasitizing on any problematic issues, such as the topic of Karabakh or border demarcation.

“If Azerbaijan and Armenia fully agree on the border issues, then there will be no need for manipulations, political and military provocations. Therefore, Armenian revanchists intend to use these events, to undermine the situation inside Armenia to spoil Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s decisions,” Kovalenko said.

“Of course, Pashinyan is not the best leader of Armenia, but, as we see, it is possible to negotiate with him politically. Despite after the 44-day second Karabakh war he expressed reluctance to negotiate anything with Azerbaijan, but having realized that Russia is not his ally, and the West will not be involved in returning Karabakh to Armenia, Pashinyan understood that it is better to agree on a peaceful settlement with Azerbaijan. It is not easy, but this is the most realistic variant,” he noted.

“The revanchists are taking advantage of this, trying to inflict a political and electoral blow on Pashinyan, but it is quite obvious that, most likely, they will fail, because they are only trying to involve Armenia in internal chaos, to put it in the toxic cocoon again in which they were all these years and from which they do not want to get out, like from a cesspool,” Kovalenko said.

Kazakh political analyst, candidate of political science Sharip Ishmukhamedov said that Kazakhstan is glad that the delimitation and demarcation of the border of the two countries has finally begun.

“Of course, delimitation and demarcation should have begun for a long time. However, despite the objective need for peace and security of all countries in the region, the situation is overshadowed by such calls to stop the peace process. It is obvious that the delimitation and demarcation of the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia is the first key step for long-term peace between Baku and Yerevan and the economic development of the region,” he said.

“However, such provocations, organised by the country’s leaders who were once at power in Armenia, attempts to block roads and the work itself on the border, are made to break all the positive dynamics between Baku and Yerevan. The former leaders of the regime understand that this is, in fact, their last chance to change something in the emerging peace between countries, as well as to score their political points. Then they will simply lose their popularity even faster,” the political analyst said.

He noted that these forces are taking advantage of the dissatisfaction of some citizens regarding the work on the border.

“Demarcation means peace, it is the key to good neighbourly relations between countries. It is very good that Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev  has recently visited Armenia to support these peace initiatives. I am sure that our leader has made his contribution to promoting this process, because a peaceful climate in the South Caucasus is extremely important for Kazakhstan,” he added.
