Georgia's capital in turmoil: 63 arrested in Tbilisi unrest

    REGION  01 May 2024 - 11:52

In the heart of Tbilisi, law enforcement officials apprehended 63 individuals amidst demonstrations outside Georgia's parliament, according to statements made by Georgian Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Darakhvelidze at a recent briefing.

The protests, as reported by Caliber.Az with reference to Georgian media, saw a significant police presence on Rustaveli Avenue. Darakhvelidze detailed that the arrests were made on charges of minor hooliganism and disobedience to lawful police commands, in accordance with the 166th and 173rd articles.

The detained individuals are now facing legal proceedings as tensions continue to simmer in the Georgian capital. Further updates are anticipated as authorities work to maintain order amidst ongoing civil unrest.

Special Forces and representatives of other units of the Interior Ministry began to leave Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi after several attempts to disperse a rally against the draft law on foreign agents, according to a TASS correspondent, who is reporting from the scene.

Some of the law enforcers moved to 9 April Street, leading to the service entrance of the Georgian Parliament, and some of them settled on Freedom Square. It is not known what such actions of law enforcers are connected with. Meanwhile, some of the protesters who continued to stay on Rustaveli Avenue decided to return to the Parliament building.
