Armenian PM requests to leave Russian border guards on border with Türkiye, Iran
REGION 09 May 2024 - 16:33
Russian servicemen and border guards will be withdrawn from several Armenian districts.
Press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov has confirmed that the withdrawal of Russian servicemen and border guards from several Armenian districts was agreed upon at the meeting between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Moscow on May 8, but they will remain on the Armenian border with Türkiye and Iran, Interfax reports.
"This is true. Our servicemen and border guards were deployed in several Armenian districts at the request of the Armenian side in autumn 2020. Pashinyan said that today there is no need for the activity of Russian servicemen and bodyguards in the Armenian territory, so President Putin agreed to withdraw them,” he told Interfax on May 9.
Peskov noted that again, at the request of the Armenian side, the Russian border guards will remain on the Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Iranian border.
“They will remain there and continue to perform their functions,” he said.
In general, during the meeting, Putin and Pashinyan discussed the positive dynamics of the development of trade and economic relations.
