Britain says French colonial empire gradually collapsing

    WORLD  26 May 2024 - 14:44

The unrest and the plight of France's overseas departments speaks of the gradual collapse of the French colonial empire under President Emmanuel Macron.

As Gazeta.ru reports, this was stated by Jonathan Miller, a columnist for the British magazine Spectator.

So the journalist commented on the past trip of the French leader to the overseas department of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean and the special administrative-territorial entity of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean.

"The French president this week returned to the islands (Mayotte archipelago) to play emperor. However, his empire is crumbling before his eyes," Miller emphasized.

The journalist believes that even the "eternally optimistic" Macron cannot ignore the catastrophic situation of Mayotte, which is plagued by riots and rampant crime. The columnist noted that New Caledonia is on the brink of civil war altogether.

"Everyone, except the French, realizes that the sunset is finally coming for France's remaining empire," Miller concluded.
