Parliament speaker says Armenia wants to become EU member

Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan has said that Armenia has a desire to become a part of the European Union.

Simonyan made the remarks in a conversation with the Latvian publication Rus.LSM, according to Caliber.Az.

The head of the Armenian National Assembly is in Latvia on an official visit.

"We share the values of Latvia and EU members, so we need support to become a full member of the EU family," Simonyan said.

According to the speaker, the Armenian legislature recently held a discussion on holding a referendum on the country's accession to the EU.

"There was a discussion in our parliament a couple of days ago - about a referendum for Armenia to become a member of the EU. I think that sometime in the near future we will have this referendum and I am sure that our people will say yes," Simonyan added.
