Biden administration faces diplomatic hurdle amid Israel-Hezbollah border clashes
WORLD 27 June 2024 - 16:10
A significant diplomatic challenge is emerging for the Biden administration as it seeks to de-escalate intensifying border clashes between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
The complexity of the situation is compounded by the ongoing difficulty in arranging a cease-fire in Gaza, Caliber.Az writes, citing American media.
The interconnection between the two conflicts presents a diplomatic dilemma for the White House, which is striving to prevent a broader war that could involve Iran and extend the fighting beyond Gaza. Despite the challenges, the White House is adamant that de-escalation along Israel’s northern frontier should not depend on achieving a cease-fire in Gaza.
"We frankly, completely reject this logic," a senior Biden administration official stated, referring to Hezbollah’s stance that continued hostilities with Israel are tied to the situation in Gaza. This statement highlights the administration's efforts to separate the two conflicts in diplomatic negotiations.
In recent weeks, Hezbollah, designated by the US as a terrorist group and a close ally of Hamas, has ramped up rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel. This escalation has increased pressure on the Israeli government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which has committed to neutralizing the threat and facilitating the return of approximately 70,000 evacuated citizens.
Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s secretary-general, issued a stark warning in a televised address from Beirut, declaring, "No place in the country is safe from our rockets."
Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, emphasized the nation’s readiness and unwillingness to tolerate threats along its northern border. "Israel wants to find a solution that will change the security situation in the north. We don’t want war, but we are preparing for every scenario," Gallant asserted. "We won’t accept Hezbollah troops and military formations on the border with Israel. We won’t accept threats to our northern communities."
US special envoy Amos Hochstein has been actively engaged in efforts to broker a de-escalation agreement, which includes a proposed pullback of Hezbollah forces from the border. However, these efforts have yet to yield success. Hochstein has held multiple meetings, including discussions with Netanyahu in the Middle East and with senior officials in Lebanon.
The border skirmishes have intensified since October 7, 2023, following attacks by Hamas that ignited the current conflict in Gaza. Both Israel and Hezbollah have signalled a potential escalation, although neither side appears eager for a full-scale conflict.
