Hungarian PM denounces EU top job deals as "coalition of lies"

    WORLD  27 June 2024 - 20:13

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán arrived at an EU summit on June 27 strongly opposing the pre-agreed distribution of top EU posts among center parties, calling it "a coalition of lies."

Orbán expressed disdain for what he views as an undemocratic process that undermines voter preferences for right-wing leadership, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.

The PM criticized the European People's Party (EPP) for aligning with left-wing factions, accusing them of power politics over policy. Specifically, he denounced the potential re-election of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, citing her use of rule-of-law mechanisms against Hungary and Poland.

Orbán refrained from suggesting an alternative candidate for von der Leyen's position but asserted his disapproval of the current power dynamics within the EU. Despite having the numerical majority to decide, Orbán found common cause with Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni, who shares Her dissatisfaction. However, unlike Meloni, Orbán felt excluded from EPP coordination efforts.

Regarding EU criticism of Hungary's economic policies, particularly selective taxes, Orbán defiantly described it as a compliment affirming Hungarian success. He affirmed his government's commitment to these measures, claiming they contribute to Hungary's superior economic growth within the EU.
