Iran's Supreme Leader urges high voter turnout in presidential election

    WORLD  28 June 2024 - 11:40

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei cast his ballot in Iran's presidential election as voting commenced, urging all Iranians to participate.

He voted at the Imam Khomeini Husseiniya in Tehran amidst journalists and photographers, Caliber.Az reports citing Iranian media.

Ayatollah Khamenei expressed hope for prosperous days ahead for Iran following the election, emphasizing its pivotal role in shaping the nation's future for the coming years.

Highlighting the significance of voter turnout, he underscored its crucial role in upholding the Islamic Republic's continuation and strength globally. Ayatollah Khamenei encouraged all eligible voters to take the electoral process seriously, dismissing doubts and stressing the ease and importance of voting.

Polling stations across Iran opened at 8 am local time and will remain open for ten hours, with potential extensions by the Interior Ministry if necessary.

Over 61.45 million eligible voters, both domestically and abroad, are eligible to participate, with extensive measures in place by security forces to ensure a safe election process.

The election features four remaining candidates chosen from an initial pool of 80 applicants. The new administration, the 14th since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, is set to assume office in late June or early July for a four-year term.
