US ambassador upbeat: Baku-Yerevan steps offer historic opportunity for peace

    POLITICS  29 June 2024 - 09:11

At an event commemorating the 248th anniversary of US independence, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mark Libby expressed optimism about the evolving relations between Baku and Yerevan, highlighting significant strides towards normalization, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.

He underscored the United States' commitment to a lasting partnership with Azerbaijan, noting over $1 billion in support since Azerbaijan regained independence.

"Since Azerbaijan regained its independence, the United States has committed more than $1 billion to promote education and economic development, support internally displaced persons affected by the conflict, and rid this country of deadly landmines. But we also look forward to a long-term partnership. Together we seek deeper cooperation that will ensure peace in the region," the ambassador said.

The diplomat recalled that Azerbaijan and Armenia have begun the process of border delimitation, held talks on the exchange of detainees and openly signalled that they are closer than ever to signing a peace agreement.

Libby characterized these actions as historic opportunities that could lead to unprecedented stability in the region and enhance trade and cooperation. He assured continued US support in encouraging both sides to seize this moment and pledged American assistance towards achieving peace and prosperity in the region.
