Over 30 killed in Kenyan anti-government protests
    Report by Human Rights Watch

    WORLD  29 June 2024 - 13:16

Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported that at least 30 people have been killed during anti-government rallies in Kenya.

According to the organization, the protests, which began on June 18 in the capital Nairobi, escalated with police opening fire on demonstrators by June 25, Caliber.Az reports.

Initial media reports indicated 13 deaths and over 200 injuries. However, HRW's findings revealed that police had shot and killed 23 people by the evening of June 25. These figures were corroborated through interviews with relatives of the deceased, eyewitnesses, and records from hospitals and morgues in Nairobi.

HRW also highlighted numerous cases of missing persons following participation in the protests.

The demonstrations erupted in response to a new bill passed by the Kenyan parliament aimed at raising taxes to bolster the national budget. The violent crackdown on protesters has drawn significant concern from human rights organizations and the international community.
