Georgia-Azerbaijan border highway to boost trade, safety, tourism
REGION 29 June 2024 - 14:36
Construction of a new highway Tbilisi-Sagarejo (Kakheti) to the border with Azerbaijan is progressing on with the project scheduled for completion in 2024.
The highway, part of the main road linking Tbilisi and the Kakheti region, is also a critical transit route to Azerbaijan’s northwestern regions, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.
The 35-kilometer Tbilisi-Sagarejo road is divided into three segments: the Vaziani bypass road, the Vaziani-Sagarejo section, and the Sagarejo bypass road. Currently, the Vaziani bypass is operational, with a four-kilometer stretch already open to traffic.
The remaining two sections, totaling 31 kilometers, are under construction and expected to be completed this year. The project involves building a four-lane cement-concrete highway, financed by the Georgian state budget at a cost of GEL 527.2 million.
The new road will alleviate traffic congestion through densely populated villages and towns, such as Vaziani, Sartichala, Ninotsminda, and Sagarejo. By improving road safety and reducing travel time, the road aims to boost the development of agriculture and tourism in the Kakheti region, while enhancing Georgia’s role as a key transit corridor.
The Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure emphasized that the expressway will strengthen transit connections with Azerbaijan and support regional economic growth.
