Media: Armenian authorities suppress new political parties ahead of elections
REGION 02 July 2024 - 10:42
Armenian authorities are taking extensive measures to shape the political environment to their advantage and prevent the emergence of new parties that could pose a threat in the forthcoming elections, Caliber.Az reports citing Yerevan media.
Sources indicate that the State Register has been directed to use every possible means to block the registration of new political parties. This directive seems to be the reason behind the registration difficulties encountered by newly formed parties such as former Defence Minister Arshak Karapetyan's National Front, Mihran Poghosyan's Armenian National Unity, and Hayk Marutyan's New Force.
In addition to these registration obstacles, existing political parties are reportedly engaging in a practice of purchasing registration documents directly from their original founders. This strategy is intended to deter other political figures from entering the electoral race. For example, Lyudmila Sargsyan's party has allegedly been sold, although the identity of the buyer remains unknown. Reports suggest that she was paid $4,000 for the party. Similar transactions have supposedly taken place with Tigran Karapetyan's "People's Party" and other parties as well.
