Over 200 hotels in Azerbaijan achieve national star classification

More than 200 hotels and inns in Azerbaijan have successfully passed the National Star Classification System, Chairman of the State Tourism Agency Fuad Naghiyev said.

Addressing the event on assigning star ratings to hotels and the launch of the National Reservation Platform, Naghiyev revealed that the star ratings include five-star, four-star, three-star, two-star, and one-star classifications, Caliber.Az reports.

The system, mandated by the Law of Azerbaijan "On Tourism" requires that every hotel operating in the country achieve a star rating within six months of opening.

"Based on the National Star Classification, more than 200 hotels have been assigned star ratings," Naghiyev said.

"This process is crucial for establishing modern standards in the hospitality industry and fostering healthy competition."

The classification process has not been without challenges. Many hotels underwent re-inspections or had to reapply for classification due to various discrepancies. As of now, around 40 hotels have been given additional time to address these issues and will face a re-audit to ensure compliance.

Despite these hurdles, the National Star Classification is expected to advance the application of international standards in Azerbaijan’s hotel industry. This initiative is seen as a significant step in preparing for COP29, the prestigious international climate conference scheduled to be hosted in the country later this year.

"The primary goal moving forward is to enhance the role of the hotel industry in organizing COP29 at the highest level of excellence," Naghiyev emphasized.

"Hotels and accommodation facilities will be featured on an official online booking platform to centralize arrangements for visitors attending the event."

The State Tourism Agency, along with the Azerbaijan Tourism Board and the Azerbaijan Hotel Association continues to offer advisory support to hotels throughout the classification process.
