China assumes SCO chairmanship
WORLD 04 July 2024 - 14:41
The chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) has transitioned from Kazakhstan to China.
According to the Astana Declaration signed by the SCO Council of Heads of State in Kazakhstan's capital, the next SCO summit will be held in China, Caliber.Az reports citing TASS.
"The chairmanship of the SCO for the upcoming period has passed to the People's Republic of China. The next meeting of the Council of Heads of State of SCO member states will be held in China in 2025," according to the document published on the Kremlin website.
The summit, where Kazakhstan reviewed the outcomes of its chairmanship in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), concluded in Astana. Over 150 events addressing various aspects of cooperation within the organisation were held throughout the year.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a regional intergovernmental organisation established to promote political, economic, and security cooperation among its member states. Founded in 2001, the SCO has grown in influence and scope, addressing various regional and international issues.
The SCO plays a crucial role in regional stability and development, particularly in Central Asia. It serves as a platform for dialogue and collaboration among major powers like China, Russia, and India, helping to balance geopolitical interests and foster regional integration.
Overall, the SCO continues to evolve as a key player in promoting peace, security, and development in the Eurasian region, reflecting the growing interconnectedness and strategic importance of its member states.
