UK's Labour Party achieves landslide victory
Ending 14 years of conservative rule
WORLD 05 July 2024 - 12:13
According to exit polls, Keir Starmer and his revitalized Labour Party achieved a landslide victory in Britain on July 4.
This ends 14 years of Conservative Party rule and ushers in a new centre-left government, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.
This election was driven more by public sentiment than specific policies, with voters expressing their dissatisfaction with the incumbent Tories and showing a readiness to support what Starmer describes as a "changed Labour Party," now free of its hard-left factions and socialist rhetoric.
The sophisticated exit poll, commissioned by Britain’s leading broadcasters, indicated that Labour was set to win 410 seats in the 650-seat Parliament.
The Conservatives were projected to secure 131 seats, marking the party's worst performance since its inception. The Liberal Democrats were expected to come in third with 61 seats. A surprising outcome was the strong performance of Nigel Farage’s new right-wing Reform UK party. Official results will follow, with most expected to be announced in the early morning hours in Britain.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps lost to Labour’s Andrew Lewin in Welwyn Hatfield, with the two securing 33.2 per cent and 41 per cent respectively.
The conclusion of Conservative rule and the resurgence of a more disciplined, centrist "establishment Labour" represent a significant shift for Britain's leading political parties. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, though not required to call an election before the end of the year, took a gamble, hoping for a narrowing of the polls or a reprieve from internal party rebellion.
It was a grim election night for the Tories. Sunak’s 18 months in office had been relatively stable, yet voters expressed to pollsters a loss of trust in the Conservatives' ability to manage the economy, a domain that had historically been one of the party’s strengths.
The UK's Labour Party has secured a landslide victory, ending 14 years of Conservative rule, in an election driven more by public sentiment than specific policy issues. This victory marks a significant shift in British politics, with Keir Starmer's revitalized Labour Party poised to lead a new center-left government.
