Iran cautions Armenia about provoking "Big Satan"

Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani has criticised the US policy in the region, arguing that it neglects the interests of the peoples of the South Caucasus.

Sobhani made these remarks in response to Washington's statements regarding its support for the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports citing the Armenian media.

“We support Armenia and Azerbaijan’s efforts towards achieving peace. We oppose war and advocate for peace. Peace is the only viable option for the region, and this is our principled stance. We endorse dialogue between Yerevan and Baku. However, Tehran remains skeptical of Washington,” he stated.

Sobhani emphasised that when the "Big Satan" enters the region, it pursues its own agenda without prioritizing the peace and security of nations.

He further commented that the US employs diverse methods to achieve its objectives.

"The US aims to transform the South Caucasus into a base for countering another nation. Based on our experiences with the 'Big Satan,' we maintain significant skepticism towards its declarations. Iran doubts that the US desires prosperity for the countries in the region," the ambassador stressed.

"The US is geographically distant to be directly impacted by escalation in this region. Any conflict or tension here will affect all regional countries," he added.

Sobhani emphasised that the 3+3 format, involving regional countries, could contribute to achieving long-term peace. This framework addresses not only political matters but also economic and trade aspects.

The normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan refers to efforts aimed at reducing tensions and resolving longstanding conflicts between the two countries.

Overall, the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan seeks to address deep-rooted political, territorial, and humanitarian issues to achieve lasting peace and stability in the South Caucasus region.
