Smallpox vaccine may protect against monkeypox, WHO says
WORLD 24 May 2022 - 16:58
A vaccine developed to fight the smallpox virus can protect against smallpox in monkeys.
Previous studies have indicated that such protection is 85 percent effective, Rosamund Lewis, head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Smallpox Secretariat, said at a briefing in Geneva on May 24, TASS reports.
"Past studies suggest that smallpox vaccines can be 85 percent effective against monkeypox. Studies are underway for new vaccines, and we don't have numbers [characterizing their effectiveness] at this time, we will continue to monitor," Lewis said.
She stressed that the smallpox vaccine creates "cross-protection", so people who have been vaccinated "may also be protected against monkeypox". The expert recalled that in the past, a large proportion of the population had been vaccinated against smallpox, and "that may be one of the reasons why we don't see many cases [of monkeypox] now".
Lewis recalled that smallpox was eradicated in 1980, but vaccine supplies for it remained.
They were retained to "develop medical countermeasures", including "diagnostics, vaccines, and treatments". Those stockpiles "should be refreshed," she said, to find out what condition they are in, and the WHO is "doing that now".
"We have newer vaccines and those that were used 50 years ago, and some WHO member states have access to some strategic stockpiles of these products," the WHO official stated. However, she added that these vaccines are available in "very limited" quantities.
Earlier on May 24, the WHO reported that there have been 131 confirmed human cases of monkeypox and 106 suspected cases of infection in 19 countries worldwide since May 7.
