Germany to halt imports of coal from Russia

Germany is preparing to stop coal imports from Russia by the end of this year’s autumn.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is on a visit to South Africa, made the relevant statement in a press conference on May 24, according to TASS.

“We intend to stop importing coal from Russia by the end of autumn and do it thanks to other suppliers, including South Africa,” Scholz said. “This is the area where you can manage [the situation],” Scholz said.

The chancellor noted that although there is a desire within the European Union to impose an embargo on oil supplies from Russia, "it will take time."

Scholz said that the German authorities have been working on the issue of how to replace the oil coming through oil pipelines to two German enterprises and shift it to tanker delivery.

He noted that Germany will diversify its gas sources, primarily by increasing imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The German chancellor arrived in South Africa on May 23, when he held talks with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
