Ukraine proposes new corridor for grain export

The Ukrainian authorities have proposed a "new safe corridor" for the export of grain from its territory.

The exact route of the corridor is yet to be specified, according to the Turkish Yeni Safak newspaper. If Russia and Ukraine can agree, their representatives will hold a meeting in Istanbul with the participation of Turkish and UN officials.

According to the newspaper, the work is underway on a plan for the export of grain. Ukraine wants security guarantees once its ports are cleared of mines, while Russia is demanding that its ships "not encounter any surprises when entering international waters”.

The total volume of grain that Ukraine and Russia could not supply to the world market is estimated at 40 million tons. Because of this, from the unnamed Western countries "there are calls with questions about the upcoming meeting in Istanbul”, according to the newspaper.

The Turkish Milliyet newspaper wrote that from June 27 to July 3, talks between Russia, Ukraine, Türkiye and the UN will be held in Istanbul, where they will discuss the issue of grain export.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he was ready to facilitate the export of Ukrainian grain in the event of demining the ports. Ukraine wants to get security guarantees first. Türkiye and the UN are also involved in the discussions of the issues concerning grain export.

In June, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported that the authorities had managed to establish two routes for grain exports through Poland and Romania. In the same month, grain from the territories of the Zaporizhzhya region controlled by the Russian army began to be delivered to the Middle East. The Kremlin was assured that Russia “did not steal any grain” in response to relevant reports.
