Kyiv unveils number of Russian agents in Ukraine until Feb. 24
WORLD 29 June 2022 - 14:51
Spokesman for the Ukrainian Security Service Artem Dekhtyarenko has said that more than 7,000 Russian intelligence officers worked in Ukraine before the full-scale invasion.
“Russian President Vladimir Putin really wanted to capture Kyiv within three days. For this purpose, the Russians intended to use the entire arsenal, all the tools they had, beginning from the military and ending with sabotage groups and agents of influence. The special services had their own clear tasks,” Dekhtyarenko said in an interview with Ukraine’s Glavkom website.
In particular, the Russian Federal Security Service was engaged in reconnaissance and subversive activity, preparation and interaction with collaborators to quickly create an occupying power on the spot,” the spokesman said, adding that such a scenario is now observed in Ukraine’s Kherson city.
Dekhtyarenko said that before the war, thousands of intelligence officers worked against Ukraine.
“You should understand that even before the war, more than 7,000 intelligence officers worked against Ukraine. This direction was constantly intensified to destabilise the situation,” he noted.
He added that the agents of the Federal Security Service actively worked in Kyiv in January-February 2022, before the invasion. Even private security organisations played a special role. Russia failed to implement most of the tasks thanks to the work of the Ukrainian Security Service.
