Armenian Prosecutor's Office targets family of Dashnak representative

29 March 2024 13:43

The Armenian Prosecutor's Office has initiated legal proceedings against Ishkhan Saghatelyan, father of Vachik Saghatelyan, a prominent figure within the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Dashnaktsutyun General Assembly and Member of Parliament, in a move that has raised concerns over potential political motivations.

Armenian media outlets have reported on the development, indicating that Ishkhan Saghatelyan has confirmed the launch of a criminal case against him. Characterizing the charges as politically motivated and baseless, Saghatelyan refrained from delving into the specifics of the case, according to Caliber.Az.

"This is yet another fabricated case aimed at political persecution," remarked Ishkhan Saghatelyan, expressing his disdain for what he perceives as a concerted effort to silence dissent.

The legal scrutiny extends beyond Ishkhan Saghatelyan, encompassing his brothers as well. Nairi and Gurgen Saghatelyan have reportedly faced criminal charges related to their alleged involvement in an altercation during protests linked to the resistance movement. The case has progressed to the courtroom, adding to the familial ordeal.

Furthermore, the husband of Saghatelyan's sister has encountered professional repercussions, with reports indicating his suspension from the directorial position at Sevan College.

The unfolding legal saga involving Ishkhan Saghatelyan and his relatives underscores the heightened tensions within Armenian politics, with critics decrying what they perceive as a crackdown on dissent and opposition voices. The situation has elicited concerns both domestically and internationally regarding the erosion of democratic norms and the rule of law.
