Azerbaijan's COP29 initiatives promote accessibility, inclusivity
The COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company is implementing a comprehensive range of initiatives at Baku Stadium to ensure an inclusive environment for the upcoming COP29 climate conference. Prioritizing accessibility and comfort for all attendees, these efforts are aligned with one of the seven core commitments of the company’s sustainability policy.
In a historic first for COP conferences, sign language interpretation services will be provided in the plenary hall, complemented by an audio induction system designed for individuals with hearing and speech impairments. Sign language interpreters will be available throughout sessions and panel discussions to facilitate communication and engagement, Caliber.Az reports citing COP29 Azerbaijan.
The event venue has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate individuals with visual impairments. Key features include designated areas with contrasting colors, accessible colored door signs, information boards, and venue maps, as well as a variety of brochures produced in Braille. Most of these materials have been developed by visually impaired residents of Azerbaijan, ensuring they meet the needs of the community.
An accessibility information point will be established to provide resources such as sunflower symbol ribbons for individuals with hidden disabilities and a Braille venue map. Attendees will also have access to wheelchair maintenance services, technical support, and charging stations for electric wheelchairs, along with spare wheelchairs for those in need.
To ensure smooth navigation throughout the venue, ramps and lifts will be installed, along with designated parking spaces, accessible restrooms, and quiet rooms. New “green crossing” zones will facilitate pedestrian movement, and tactile maps will be available at the entrances to the Blue and Green Zones, marking another first for COP events.
Accessibility commitments extend to accommodation and transportation services, with participants receiving detailed information on accessible lodging options and transportation alternatives to ensure seamless travel to and from Baku Stadium.
To further support individuals with physical disabilities, the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company is organizing specialized training sessions for staff, volunteers, and personnel from various service sectors. These sessions aim to equip employees and volunteers with the skills necessary to assist all participants, reinforcing the conference’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility for all attendees.
