Germany acknowledges Türkiye’s role as mediator in Azerbaijan-Armenia peace talks

The discussions regarding Ankara's role in the negotiations for the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace treaty have been held during a meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock in New York.

“Türkiye is an important mediator for peace in our neighborhood. Türkiye can contribute to a historic peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Concrete steps towards this were discussed between German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly,” Caliber.Az reports, citing the message on the German Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs on X.

Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stressed that Armenia launched a dialogue with Türkiye and agreed to start to normalise relations with Azerbaijan without preconditions.

“We are unlikely to succeed without the active and sincere support of the international community. Armenia has adopted a peace agenda and is following the path of demarcation and delimitation of borders with Azerbaijan,” the Armenian prime minister stressed. 

“Azerbaijan voiced its ideas on the normalisation of the Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, covering five main points. The issue is the mutual recognition of each other's territorial integrity, demarcation and delimitation of borders without territorial claims against each other,” the prime minister said. 

“Having considered these proposals, we saw that, in fact, there is nothing unacceptable for us, however, we stated that these points do not affect the entire agenda of relations. We have expanded this agenda by including the issues of security, the rights of the Armenians of Karabakh region and the final status,” the prime minister added.
