IAEA chief calls for immediate cessation of shelling of Zaporizhzhya NPP
The security situation at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is causing growing concern and the shelling must stop immediately, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said.
"This is an unacceptable situation and it is of growing concern. There is no power in Enerhodar. The power plant has no external power supply. And we see that after the infrastructure is repaired, it is damaged again," Grossi said in a statement issued on Friday, according to Interfax.
He said IAEA staff at the ZNPP had told him that the situation at the plant had become "serious" due to shelling last night and that Enerhodar's power supply infrastructure was damaged. "There is no water, no electricity, no sewage system," the IAEA chief pointed out.
"I call for an immediate cessation of all shelling of the entire area as a matter of urgency. Only this will ensure the safety of the employees working there and allow the restoration of power to Enerhodar and the nuclear power plant," Grossi added.
