Moldovan president eyes re-election
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has opened the door to seeking a second term in the 2024 elections, while advocating for a public referendum on the country's future path towards European Union (EU) membership.
In a message marking three years since her 2020 victory, Sandu acknowledged progress made during her tenure, including maintaining peace, bolstering national independence, and launching EU accession talks, according to Moldova 1.
"We still have important steps to take. I pledge to continue, if you will give me your trust for a new term in 2024," she said stressing the need for continued efforts.
Further underscoring her commitment to EU inclusion, Sandu urged Parliament to initiate a national referendum on the issue this autumn.
"Moldova's future is in the European family. It is necessary to say clearly - the whole country - which path we choose," she said.
This move could solidify public support for EU aspirations and bolster Sandu's position as a champion of this agenda.
