Opposition MP says West unlikely to extend military support to Armenia

02 April 2024 11:18

Artur Khachatryan, a member of the opposition faction Armenia, has criticized the West for its reluctance to provide military support to Armenia amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Speaking to Armenian media, Khachatryan expressed scepticism about the outcome of an upcoming meeting with the European Union (EU) scheduled for April 5, Caliber.Az reports.

"The meeting on April 5 will be about handing over money to Armenia, nothing more. It is about increasing Armenia's economic sustainability. That is, they [EU] propose to give Armenia money so that there will be no social upheaval in Armenia, which will lead to Pashinyan's immediate removal from office,” he said.

Khachatryan further criticized the Pashinyan government's economic policies: "If today Europe opens all its doors for Armenia, it doesn't matter, because as a result of the Pashinyan government's policy, Armenia's economy has nothing to export to Europe. Yes, the European Union is a political structure, it can open doors, but the question is whether they (the Armenian authorities - ed.) will be able to use this opportunity, because they have destroyed all industry. And the question arises: what will they export to Europe, when the very industry and agriculture of our country are defeated?”

According to the MP, Europe is trying to find new allies against Russia politically, but what Armenia will get from it is unknown.

"It makes no sense to expect that the West will suddenly be ready to provide military support to Armenia. Pashinyan has brought our country to this difficult situation. The man who is responsible for the country has brought it to a state where we do not receive effective support from any side," Khachatryan added.
