Parliament speaker: Armenia's need for new constitution is result of regional geopolitical shifts
President of the Armenian National Assembly Alen Simonyan has said that the need for a new constitution is a result of geopolitical changes in the region.
The politician denied allegations that the authorities want to change Armenia’s basic law under Azerbaijan’s pressure at a joint press conference with his Czech colleague in Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports citing the Armenian media.
He said that the commission on constitutional changes was created long before Azerbaijan started talking about the need for these changes. On the other hand, Simonyan added that since the declaration of Armenia’s independence, there have been provisions in the fundamental documents that must be revised. This is connected with geopolitical changes and “recent events”.
“We must understand Armenia’s goals and the reasons for its existence. Does it exist to restore Greater Armenia or to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens? We must answer these questions, and I think that our society has various answers,” he said.
He is sure that Armenia cannot be amorphous, and no one can challenge this.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a governmental meeting on January 19 that Armenia needs a new basic law that will make the country more competitive and viable in new geopolitical and regional conditions.
