Sweden to invest over $735 million in military infrastructure
The Swedish government has announced an investment of 8 billion SEK (over $735 million) in the construction of military infrastructure.
According to a statement from the government office, this decision comes in response to the "significant growth of the Armed Forces," creating a need for additional storage facilities and shelters, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The funds will be allocated for the construction of new facilities across the country, with the work scheduled to take place from 2025 to 2030.
"The investment in the Swedish Fortifications Agency is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Sweden's defence capabilities. The agency will acquire, repair, and build new structures nationwide to ensure adequate storage for all the equipment procured by the Armed Forces," the statement added.
Thus, Sweden officially became NATO's newest member on March 7, 2024, after submitting its instrument of accession to the North Atlantic Treaty at the US Government in Washington DC. With Sweden's inclusion, NATO now has 32 member countries.
Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg hailed the development as historic, stating, "Sweden will now take its rightful place at NATO’s table, with an equal say in shaping policies and decisions. After more than 200 years of non-alignment, Sweden now benefits from the protection under Article 5, the cornerstone of Allies’ security."
He added that Sweden’s membership strengthens NATO, enhances Sweden’s security, and contributes to the overall safety of the Alliance.
