Türkiye set to strengthen its air power in Eastern Mediterranean with incoming Eurofighter jets
Türkiye is set to further alter the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean with its ongoing negotiations for the purchase of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets.
On December 18, two Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft from the British Air Force will arrive in Türkiye for familiarization, marking a significant step in the country's effort to diversify and strengthen its air capabilities, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.
Turkish National Defence Minister Yaşar Güler confirmed that discussions surrounding the Eurofighter acquisition are progressing positively. The two aircraft, which recently participated in a military exercise in Qatar, will land in Ankara on December 18, allowing Turkish officials an opportunity to inspect the advanced jets.
Meanwhile, Western media outlets have closely followed Türkiye’s negotiations, suggesting that the purchase of Eurofighter jets could be a game-changer in the country’s military strategy. The acquisition would bolster Türkiye’s ability to project power, not only in the Eastern Mediterranean but also in broader contested regions.
Experts believe the addition of these sophisticated jets to Türkiye’s air force would significantly shift regional dynamics, especially in the context of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
In addition to the Eurofighters, Türkiye boasts a formidable fleet of F-16s and is a leader in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, with the Bayraktar TB2 being one of its most well-known exports. The country is also making strides with its domestic KAAN project and is working toward developing its own 5th-generation fighter jet, further cementing its growing aerospace industry.
