Ukrainian officials work to garner Trump's support for Kyiv

05 January 2025 17:54

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's team is working to win over newly elected US President Donald Trump to align him with Kyiv's side.

For several weeks, trusted representatives of Zelenskyy have been heading to Washington, where they have been courting and trying to persuade those close to Donald Trump, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

At present, Trump's team has not provided any hints regarding potential solutions to the conflict in Ukraine. However, journalists pointed out that the inauguration of the new US president is approaching soon.

Ukraine is preparing for Donald Trump to initiate peace negotiations after assuming office. The strategy of the new US administration could prove decisive for the current situation, though the resolution of the crisis remains a challenging task.

Trump has repeatedly stated that ending the war in Ukraine is one of his top international priorities. As of the beginning of 2025, Ukraine desperately needs a change in dynamics. Russia continues its offensive in the Donbas, while Kyiv is struggling to mobilize enough people for the front line. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are lacking resources without Western assistance. Three scenarios for the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine were outlined in Germany.

Military expert and professor at the Bundeswehr University in Munich Carlo Masala said that the conflict in Ukraine will last longer than the one in the Gaza Strip.

"President-elect Donald Trump has acknowledged that reaching an agreement in this conflict [in Ukraine] is much more difficult than he initially expected," he said.

Masala outlined three possible scenarios for resolving the Ukrainian conflict. The first involves negotiations with Russia in case of meeting its demands, including reducing the number of Ukrainian servicemen and the resignation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a scenario deemed unacceptable for Ukraine.

In the second scenario, Trump halts military aid to Kyiv, leaving Ukraine in a vulnerable position. The third option involves increasing US military support for Ukraine to apply pressure on Russia and push for negotiations, despite previous statements.
