US, EU, and allied nations urge 21-day ceasefire along Israel-Lebanon border
The United States, European Union, and several allied nations — including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar — have issued a call for an immediate ceasefire on the Israel-Lebanon border.
This appeal was made in a joint statement released by the White House press office, Caliber.Az reports.
The statement emphasizes, “We call for an immediate 21-day ceasefire along the Lebanon-Israel border to create space for diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a resolution.”
These nations also urged the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2735, which was proposed by the United States, to support an agreement for a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, alongside the release of hostages held in the area.
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health said that Israeli attacks killed 72 people across Lebanon on September 25, as the death toll from Israel’s bombings surpassed 620.
Some 500,000 people may now have been displaced by Israel’s massive bombing campaign across Lebanon, the country’s foreign minister says.
Tensions in the Middle East escalated dramatically following the incursion of Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on October 7, 2023. This attack resulted in the deaths of residents in border settlements and the abduction of approximately 250 hostages.
The militants characterized their actions as retaliation against Israeli measures at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. In response, Israel imposed a complete blockade on Gaza and initiated retaliatory strikes in the enclave, as well as in parts of Lebanon and Syria, before commencing a ground operation in Gaza.
