White House backs Trump's initiative to involve China in Ukraine conflict resolution
Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Advisor, has expressed support for the initiative proposed by elected President Donald Trump to involve China in resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Sullivan highlighted that China, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, could play a significant role in the peace process, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“The idea that China could somehow be part of the negotiations for establishing a just peace in Ukraine is not crazy. I think the point raised by Mr. Trump is logical, and I have thought about it myself,” Sullivan stated during his appearance at the 92NY cultural centre in New York.
He also said he hoped Trump would “continue to provide Ukraine with the defensive capacity so that Ukraine's in the best possible position on the battlefield, which will put them in a better position at the negotiating table.”
Sullivan further revealed that he had discussed China’s potential role in the peace process with representatives from Ukraine and other European countries.
“The world should put the onus on China to make the right choice,” he said.
However, Sullivan emphasized that Washington is not seeking to make Beijing the main mediator in European affairs.
Earlier in December, Donald Trump urged for an “immediate ceasefire and negotiations” to end the conflict in Ukraine, suggesting that China could play a key role in this effort. Trump warned that failing to resolve the crisis could result in the situation escalating into something much worse.
