Armenian president again complains about Russia, CSTO
REGION 17 January 2023 - 09:14
Russia and the states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in September, after the “aggression” of Azerbaijan against Armenia, were supposed to provide military assistance to Yerevan, political statements were also expected in the country, but neither of these has happened yet, Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturian said.
His remarks came in at a joint briefing with Estonian President Alar Karis in Tallin on January 16, Interfax reports.
“Armenian-Russian relations are at a strategic level, and Russia is the guarantor of Armenia's security, but, unfortunately, we have had problems lately, especially after the September 13 events. The September attack was carried out precisely on the territory of Armenia, and Russia and the CSTO were supposed to provide military assistance to Armenia. Azerbaijan advanced up to 7 km [and] 5 km in different places, and this was the case when both the CSTO members and Russia had to provide us with military assistance,” Khachaturian said.
According to him, political statements were also expected in Yerevan.
“Neither one nor the other has happened yet. Of course, in fairness, it should be noted that Russia also participated in the negotiations on the cessation of hostilities, but US Secretary of State Blinken, French President Macron, and the head of the EU Parliament Charles Michel also took an active part in them,” the Armenian president noted.
He added that Armenia and Estonia, being small countries, cannot ensure their security on their own and need the support of international organizations or individual countries. In this regard, according to Khachaturian, Armenia's expectations "have not been fully justified."
