Pundit: Armenia faces crucial decision amid EU-US pressure

    REGION  29 March 2024 - 15:37

Armenian pundit Ara Papyan, in a recent interview, highlighted the pivotal position Armenia finds itself in, as pressure mounts from both the European Union and the United States regarding its geopolitical alignment.

With a joint meeting between EC Chairman von der Leyen, Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan, and US Secretary of State Blinken scheduled for April 5, Papyan's insights shed light on the urgency of Armenia's decision-making, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

Papyan emphasized the strategic importance of Armenia in the region, noting that while Russian troops are stationed in Georgia's South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and a small peacekeeping contingent remains in Azerbaijan, Armenia stands as the linchpin. He warned that the loss of Armenia would significantly alter the geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus, potentially impacting the stability of the North Caucasus as well.

The political scientist pointed out the shift in attitude from Western powers, indicating a growing impatience with Armenia's ambiguous stance. Papyan recounted efforts to convey Armenia's strategic significance to Western partners, but noted a dismissive attitude initially. However, recent developments suggest a change in perspective, with France and the USA beginning to engage more actively.

Papyan highlighted the significance of the April 5 meeting, indicating it as a crucial juncture for Armenia's future alignment. He revealed insider information regarding a forthcoming joint EU-US policy statement in May, underscoring the seriousness of Western intentions. Papyan interpreted the timing of the meeting as a clear message from the West to Armenia, demanding a definitive stance.

"The EU and US are waiting for a response," Papyan stated, characterizing the message as a call to end ambiguity and declare allegiance. He stressed that Armenia's leader, Prime Minister Pashinyan, faces a critical test on April 5. Failure to clarify Armenia's position could result in Western powers reassessing their engagement with the country.

Papyan acknowledged Armenia's historical ties with Russia but underscored the changing geopolitical dynamics, emphasizing that Armenia can no longer afford a "both-and" policy given the escalating tensions between Russia and the West.

As the April 5 meeting approaches, Armenia stands at a crossroads, with its future alignment hanging in the balance amid increasing pressure from Western powers. The decisions made in the coming days could have far-reaching implications for Armenia's place in the global arena.
