Armenian Parliament Speaker urges clarity and commitment in peace treaty negotiations
REGION 06 May 2024 - 14:58
"I have been saying since the end of last year that there was an opportunity to sign a peace treaty; what was needed was political will on the part of Azerbaijan."
Caliber.Az reports that Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan made this statement on May 6 during a conversation with journalists at the National Assembly of Armenia.
"We hope that this process is another signal that it should be completed very quickly because Armenia is moving in this direction and will continue to engage actively," he added.
Responding to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's remark that the peace treaty fully reflects their approaches, Alen Simonyan said, "International norms are fully articulated, which also align with our approaches. In areas of disagreement, Armenia objects. Evidence of this is that the agreement has been returned twice already, with exchanges of proposals. Why? Because they send their proposals, and we respond: no, here are our proposals. This delay is the result."
When asked about the main disagreement between the sides, the Armenian Parliament Speaker stated, "There are no fundamental disagreements; we address the points one by one, based on international principles, resolving each issue step by step...
"It's crucial to avoid double interpretation. Some countries and politicians attempted such speculations after the November 10 statement, which serves as a lesson for us all to ensure clarity in wording so that neither side can claim: 'You promised me one thing,' countered by, 'You promised me something else.'"
